The WISER podcast was started by Women In Surgery at Emory Residencies in 2018 to celebrate the life stories of our surgeons, and mentor the next generation of diverse, forward-thinking, problem-solving, surgeon leaders.
The world of surgery has changed immensely, in a good way. But we still have leaps and bounds to go – we can do better.
In order for us to not become stagnant, to continually move surgery to a more inclusive and equitable culture, we need to understand the experiences of those who trailblazed before us, and use those lessons to adapt not only ourselves but the systems around us. We rarely now experience explicit biases, but there are many implicit biases that we often don’t recognize exist, until we bring it to our awareness.
This is our forum to do that – to preserve and share the many lessons from past #HERstory, and also invite young and aspiring surgeons to #beWISER and lead us to a better place.
We hope you enjoy listening to this series as much as we have enjoyed making them, and we welcome you to join us in changing surgical culture!
